NYCOS Edinburgh Choir to record new Britten-inspired work

NYCOS has been selected to take part in the 2021 Friday Afternoons project.

Friday Afternoons is a set of songs written by Benjamin Britten for his brother (a teacher) to use in school on a Friday afternoon. Aldeburgh Music has for some years run a song commissioning project round the principles of Britten’s songs, connecting teachers and young people with contemporary composers.

Friday Afternoons is a Britten Pears Arts led singing project connecting teachers and young people with contemporary composers, through creating high-quality repertoire, resources and training to encourage challenging and exciting music-making experiences for all. The project began in 2013 as part of the celebrations for Benjamin Britten’s centenary.

Each year they publish a new set of songs for primary-school-age children free on their website and this year the songs are composed by Russell Hepplewhite, with lyrics by Michael Rosen. NYCOS Edinburgh Senior Choir will record one of the songs in a virtual choir for publication in May 2021.
