Musicianship & Methodology

Accredited in partnership with British Kodály Academy through CPD UK

Since July 2020, we have been running online courses in Musicianship and Methodology and engaged with musicians, class teachers, students and specialists from 23 countries across the world as well as many, many people in the UK. This has been one of the ‘silver linings’ of the pandemic where you can access training in the Kodály approach without leaving the comfort of your own home.

You don’t have to be a trained musician to join us as we have something for every level. These classes are accredited in partnership with British Kodály Academy through CPD UK, however, the assessments are optional.

By attending weekly classes, you have time to assimilate and practice what you have learned. We record the sessions as an aide memoire.

Online Kodály Musicianship Classes

These informal, one-hour sessions will run over 6 weeks, building on and improving the skills you’ve already developed.

Bookings are now open for Block 1 of our online musicianship classes.

If you’re planning to join us at the NYCOS Kodály Summer School in August 2026, these sessions provide excellent preparation. Full certification options will be available at the Summer School.

The cost for one block is £59, and student prices are available.

  • Level 1/2 – An introduction to Kodály based musicianship for those people who have little or no prior musical experience.
  • Level 3/4 – An introduction to Kodály based musicianship for those people who have a strong musical background but are new to solfa.
  • Level 5/6 – For those who would like a refresher/further practice at this level.
  • Level 7/8 – For those who would like a refresher/further practice at this level.
  • Level 9/10 – For those who would like a refresher/further practice at this level.

You can read our Musicianship Level Guide before booking.

Go for Bronze, Silver and Gold In-Person Training

At NYCOS, we believe in nurturing the passion for music in every person, and we understand the vital role educators play in shaping the next generation of musicians. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce three in-person training days in November and December 2025!

The ‘Go for’ series is our Musicianship Training Programme developed by NYCOS Creative Learning Director, Lucinda Geoghegan and NYCOS Artistic Director, Christopher Bell. The training will be delivered by Lucinda herself and will offer expert guidance for adults teaching essential musicianship skills.

NYCOS’s comprehensive musicianship training programme for young musicians is for use in schools and choirs with children aged 7 and up, and provides a solid basis for beginning the music reading process and enhancing musical skills.

Many instrumental instructors recommend these resources for their pupils, and both class teachers and music specialists use these materials in schools across the country.  These will be hands-on, activity-packed days, sure to give you lots of ideas to take away and use. For anyone already working with Kodály material this is an excellent structured training programme.

If you want to work with NYCOS choirs or any of our projects, this training is required and recommended.

Sounds Musical In-Person Training

NYCOS recognises that now more so than ever, generalist primary teachers are being called upon to teach music in the classroom with fewer music specialists available. Sounds Musical comprises a set of four resources for schools that cover an age range from early years to P7: Sounds Musical for Starters (early years – P1/2), Sounds Musical (P3-P5), Sounds Musical Moving On, and Sounds Musical for Older Beginners (both for P6-7).

The aim of Sounds Musical is to give generalist primary teachers and nursery practitioners the confidence and tools to provide music education in the classroom. It has been developed as a free resource (with teacher packs, picture cards and video demonstrations of all songs/games) that teachers can access as long as they come along to our initial training day to become acquainted with the resource in a practical and meaningful way, and to develop an understanding of the underpinning approach. As there are videos of each song, you do not need to be able to read a musical score to use the resource, it’s designed to be as accessible as possible!

NYCOS YMI tutors are already delivering the resource in schools in our Local Authority Partner areas. If you are a musicianship tutor or instrumental instructor working in early years and primary schools then please also come along – these will be hands-on, activity-packed days, sure to give you lots of ideas to take away and use!

In March 2026, we are offering a mixture of free and paid-for in-person training!

The Sounds Musical Moving On and Sounds Musical for Older Beginners training day is FREE! All that we ask in return is that you consent to being recorded playing the games and singing the songs so that we can finalise the video element of this resource.

You will receive access to the resource for FREE after each training day so secure your spot on our Sounds Musical training today!
