Getting boys singing, join us in Oban for our new boys singing project!

The National Youth Choir of Scotland is offering boys in Oban and the surrounding areas the opportunity to take part in a dedicated boys-only choir experience. Research indicates that boys are more likely to engage with singing – and to continue singing – when they rehearse within a boys-only setting, where they can develop confidence and vocal security alongside their peers.

Across four Saturday mornings in 2026, boys aged 10–17 will rehearse together in a safe and supportive environment. (See key information for dates)

The day will consist of a mixture of singing and games-based musicianship – who could imagine that playing handball and throwing frisbees can teach you how music works. The sessions are energetic and we will learn fun songs in a relaxed and encouraging way.

Sessions will be led by experienced NYCOS staff who specialise in working with boys’ voices. The choir will be directed by Donald Feist, whose extensive experience with boys’ choirs brings a strong understanding of the musical and educational approaches that enable young male singers to thrive. When boys voices start to change, we know how to support them appropriately through all the stages of vocal development.

At the conclusion of each rehearsal day, parents and friends will be invited to hear a short sharing of the music explored, offering an opportunity to celebrate the boys’ progress and commitment.

There is no membership fee for NYCOS Oban Boys Choir. The sessions are free. Boys will need to bring a packed lunch. Snacks will be provided.
