Norrie McKay

Norrie is an Education Adviser with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. His work includes the Professional Update scheme, the Professional Standards and the national scheme for probationer teachers. He works extensively with local authorities, universities and the Scottish Government. Previously as a local government officer he was involved in professional review and development for teachers, management structures in schools, setting salaries for promoted teachers, student teacher placements, and union negotiations on local conditions of service.

Norrie was Head Teacher of a large secondary school for 10 years, and held curricular, pastoral and management posts in various schools. He also worked for the Scottish Council for Research in Education, latterly as a government appointed Director. His national work has included leading developments in the reform of Mathematics teaching in the senior stages, student teacher placements, and job sizing schemes for teachers. He has presented at national and international conferences and, when in local government, presented large scale concerts and tutored the senior chorus, also working with NYCoS to offer musical tuition to probationer teachers.

Norrie has sung with the chorus of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and toured with them to Australia, Germany, and Israel. Currently, he sings with the Strathclyde University Chamber Choir and has undertaken tours to Spain, Poland and Russia and residences at various English cathedrals. He also augments the Edinburgh Festival Chorus.
