Online Conducting Courses

For the first time, NYCOS is offering a series of conducting classes tailored to suit the needs of people working at different levels led by Artistic Director Christopher Bell.

Christopher has been conducting choirs, instrumental ensembles, and orchestras since he was 15 years old. He has a wealth of experience to share and has run conducting classes at NYCOS Kodály Summer School. For many years he has mentored conductors either as Fellows at the RSNO Chorus, or Student Assistant conductors working with NYCOS National Choirs.

Introduction to Conducting is for people with little or no experience but finding themselves being asked to conduct or direct in a school or community setting. Using set scores, Levels 1-3 takes participants on from this introductory level to advanced works.

Introduction to Conducting

This is a basic introduction for anyone wishing to lead a choral or instrumental group with no previous formal training in conducting. In interactive weekly sessions for up to twelve participants, this entry-level class will help in situations where you are required to take a music class or deputise for a rehearsal and would like some pointers.

You will concentrate on basic gestures, principles of conducting, how to work with singers of all ages, effective leadership and session leading. The curriculum covered is also suitable for people working with instruments.

Level 1: The Gestures You Will Need SOLD OUT

Knowledge of the basics (see Introduction to Conducting class) is expected.

In an interactive weekly class for up to eight participants, you will concentrate on gesture, how to beat, the different functions of the left and right hand (one keeps the beat, the other can cue, help with expression and character). These skills are the same whether working with a choir or an instrumental group.

Topics covered will include:

  • beating patterns in simple and compound time
  • starting a piece/setting a tempo, stopping a piece/cut offs
  • showing character and expression
  • learning and studying the set scores.

We will provide scans of the music for private study.
