2006 - NYCoS 10th Anniversary Year

The National Youth Choir of Scotland was largely founded by Christopher Bell in 1996 to provide an opportunity for young singers in Scotland to participate in choral singing at a national level. The first residential course for NYCoS at Glenalmond School in Perthshire involving 55 members established the pattern which, although expanded, is largely unchanged since then: during the course 80 - 100 singers undertake a mixture of sectional rehearsals, full rehearsals and individual singing lessons with recreation periods in the afternoon. Since then the activities of the organisation have expanded dramatically. NYCoS current activities include:

The National Youth Choir of Scotland for singers aged 16 – 24

The National Youth Training Choir for singers aged 15-19

The National Boys Choir

NYCoS Area Choirs in eight locations across Scotland

Publishing resource material for use in schools

Commissioning and publishing song material for use by young singers

Organising educational and training opportunities for teachers and choir leaders in partnerships with local authorities

Advocacy/liaison role with local authorities in Scotland, national organisations in Scotland, England and beyond
