Mini Music Makers is a network of groups which started in 2002 as an outreach project of NYCoS, aimed at engaging children and parents in singing activities at the very earliest stage. Where Mini Music Makers groups differ from others is that they are seen in the context of a progressive and natural continuum through pre-school into primary and beyond. Music in early childhood, particularly singing games and rhymes, can enhance child development in so many ways.

The first five years of a child’s life provide an irreplaceable opportunity for parents, carers and teachers to bond with the child. Language, motor skills, memory and concentration are all improved through involvement in simple musical games and activities. The positive effects of music on the child’s development are well documented. Parents should be supported in using their voice to bond with their child. Many parents of our “Pop Idol” age are unsure what to sing to their child and have little or no heritage to draw on when they play and sing with their child. Tickling games, bouncing games, play songs and lullabies from the book Singing Games and Rhymes for Tiny Tots are used in our sessions.

Much of the work of NYCoS follows the guidelines set by the Hungarian composer and educationalist Zoltán Kodály who believed that music was for everyone and that singing should be the foundation of music education. It makes sense that the earlier we start with unconscious learning the better. The children don’t know that they are learning musicianship skills – they are just playing games. It’s all going in the memory bank though, and they are absorbing things that will never leave them. It is never too early to sing with children – they will listen and learn.

What are the benefits? The most immediately obvious benefit is the FUN factor. All children enjoy playing, and they will have the opportunity to join a group and make new friends. Singing games with a circle of people is a completely different experience from doing it at home. Don’t worry if your child doesn’t want to take part immediately. It takes time for some children to settle and become familiar with the routine.

Accompanying adults will have fun too – one of our leaders reports: “A group of children (who used to be too shy to join in without their mums) took each other as partners for "Jump Jim Joe" - and the mums, not to be left out of the fun, danced with each other!”

Parents or carers bring their babies, toddlers, or nursery age children for a weekly 40 minute session of singing games, rhymes and listening activities. Adults must be prepared to join in – there is no need to have what you consider a good voice: the key factor for your child is that it is your voice! A wide range of resources – puppets, cuddly toys, parachutes and percussion instruments are used to increase the interest for the children.
