National
Youth Choir of Scotland – Area Choirs

In 1998 NYCoS formed two Children's Choirs (now known as Area Choirs), one in Livingston, West Lothian and one in Edinburgh. Each choir had approximately 60 members. Members were recruited from Primary 3 pupils (with some Primary 4 to make up numbers).
Both choirs met for one hour each week and members received musicianship training for 30 minutes and sang as a choir for the remaining 30 minutes. An annual membership fee was charged.
The musicianship work was devised by Lucinda Geoghegan,. Lucinda is a fully trained Kodaly instructor and all the Area Choirs use the Kodaly approach to music.
At present there are 10 Area Choirs - Dumfries , Dundee, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Galloway, Isle of Lewis, Midlothian, Renfrewshire, Stirling and West Lothian - with a staggering membership of
1,500 children.
Each choir follows the same guidelines. Musicianship is based on Kodaly methods and from the
first year of the choir - Training Choir - members start working towards their Bronze Award. This is followed over the next few years by Silver and Gold. Each year members are recruited from Primary 3 pupils and as the members move up the choir structure - Training Choir, Probationary Choir, Full Choir - the evening rehearsal time increases to 2 hours when members reach the full choir.
