Anne Murphy - Vocal Coach

After graduating Dip. Mus. Ed. from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in 1975, Anne taught music in Primary and Secondary schools in Central Region, becoming Principal Teacher of Music in St Modan's High School, Stirling. She coached and accompanied choirs, wind bands and orchestras at school and regional level and has also worked with adult choirs, amateur operatic societies, solo singers and instrumentalists in Scotland and the North of England.

Moving to freelance work has allowed Anne to pursue her interest in and love for choral singing. She has been on the staff of the RSNO Junior Chorus since 1995. Her work with them not only includes coaching and accompanying but also deputising for the Chorusmaster, most notably at the Edinburgh International Festival. She has also occasionally deputised for the chorusmaster of the RSNO Chorus, of which she's been a member for 20+ years.

From 1998-2003 Anne was Choral Animateur in Glasgow, a project begun by the British Federation of Young Choirs (now youngchoirs.net) and taken over by the City Council. This involved working with young singers of all ages and delivering In-service training to Primary & Secondary teachers on Choral Skills and Use & Care of the Voice. More recently, she has been working with Making Music (Scotland), delivering workshops across the country for both adult and young singers.

Work for the National Youth Choir of Scotland includes directing NYCoS Stirling Choirs, coaching NYCoS itself and delivering training on Kodály methodology to staff of Nursery schools, Primary schools and other children's choirs. She is also a Choral Assistant for the Ulster Youth Choir.

When not involved in choral work Anne works as a Therapist in two Stress Management Centres in Glasgow, delivering Counselling and Bodywork. She is currently looking at ways of bringing voicework into her therapy practice.

Anne is an Adviser to youngchoirs.net
